A World of Girls Brownie Journey and our Take Action Project!

The last few meetings, our Brownies have been working on their World of Girls Brownie Journey. It's been pretty fun.  We read some neat stories and learned some things along the way.  We learned that stories hold clues to all kinds of things and we have the power to change them too!

As we read about girls from around the world, we decided to make murals of ourselves using symbols and different colors for different things that shows us that we are all unique.  

For example, based on how many siblings you have determines the shape of your nose.  What you like to do determines what kind of hair you will have and the color of your eyes depends on how many pets you have.  After that, the girls got to add a necklace to show symbolize what they like about themselves.

We had fun going around and sharing ourselves and talking about the special parts of us!

Since we have been learning about girls all over the world and in stories, we even discussed Juliette Gordon Low and the challenges she faced when she was young, we decided on our Take Action Project.  We decided that we would research a famous girl who made a difference and turn their lives into a patch for a quilt.  Each girl would learn about somebody different and make their patch.  

We talked about girls that they could choose from and got busy!

Here is a sample of the some of the famous women that we chose.  

Although only about half of the girls got done, we will have to finish the quilt at our next meeting.  We will put our patches together and display it outside our school library so that everyone can see how amazing all these women from around the world are!

Feed My Starving Children!

Our troop took a field trip to work on our philanthropy patch. We went to a place called "Feed My Starving Children."  It's a place where you donate your time to help make and pack food for children around the world that are starving.  Most of our girls were able to attend!  We put on our hair nets and  got ready!

The lady explained that we would be packing bags of manna rice.  She explained the stations and what we would be doing. 

There were quite a few volunteers there that night so our troop got split up.  The girls set up camp at the ingredients.  They included vitamins, vegetables, soy, and rice.  They had scoops that had to be put in the bag in a certain order.

Everyone had a job to do and worked very hard.

This is what the place looks like.  They really have it down to a science.  Everyone even had to help clean up.

After an hour of working and cleanup, they tell you how many boxes you packed and how many meals that is.

We packed enough to feed 51 kids for a year!

What a great feeling to be a part of that.  We are looking into doing this again!

Where is Brownie Elf?

Yesterday we participated in a Girl Scout Service Unit even called "Where is Brownie Elf?"

It took place in downtown Plainfield.  We had different stops we needed to make.  It was a beautiful fall day so we walked it!

 First stop was the library where we had to find Brownie Elf.

 The girls spotted her all over.  In fact,  I think there were 32 Brownie Elves there!

Then we walked down Main Street to go to our next stop.

 Things got a little hairy as we crossed the bridge with a very narrow sidewalk...

But we made it to our next destination...the train depot!

Next, we walked to city hall to find the Girl Scout tree that was planted a couple of years ago.  Here we are sitting in front of it.

 Then we headed to Settlers Park to make campfire snacks!  

 The girls built an edible campfire using pretzels, marshmallows, and candy corn. Yum!

 Then we stopped in the gazebo to learn about Brownies.  We had a little candle ceremony there.

 Our last stop was Electric Park where the girls got a quick history lesson on it.  Very cool!

 Finally we ended up back at the Village Green where the girls got into groups based on the color of their hats and did a skit.

What a fun event!

Hear a Story, Change a Story!

Today was our 2nd meeting of the year and we continued to work on our World of Girls Journey!

The girls got passports as we set sail! Last time we went to the desert and played games from around the world.  Today we traveled to Thailand and learned about clues to helping us change stories for the better.

First up we thought of girls from some our favorite books.  We wrote them on an index card and then wrote one word to describe that character on the other side.  The girls had to find the word that they thought best described themselves.  Then they got to see what character they are most like.  These three were good and evil (Mal from Descendants)

Olivia was sleepy as was Sleeping Beauty.

Jackie and and Evelyn were bossy like Junie B. Jones.

Next we read a story from our journey book and discussed ways we could have changed parts of the story for the better.

That led to doing some story relays.  First one was having the girls come up and turn over a card.  After a few cards had been turned over, it was their goal to put together the Girl Scout Promise.  

After that, then they had random words in which they had to put together a story they made up.  Each girl got to turn over 2 cards this time and they had to build a story.  It was harder than it looks.  Each girl had the chance to change the story as it was their turn.

Next we talked about the two stories we read from our journey books and each pair got a different clue to work on coming up with a change that they could use to make the story better.

Our last game was "Circle Round the Story."  We sat in a circle and one girl started the story by saying a sentence.  After that, the next girl added a sentence.  It went around the circle, each one adding to the story.  The girls had fun.  Our story was about Claire and Addie going to the beach.
